Could Your Hormones Be Affecting How You Feel?

Feeling tired, foggy, irritable, or simply “not like yourself” can be easy to chalk up to stress or getting older. But for many men and women, these changes may also be associated with declining hormone levels.

Hormones are chemical messengers that help regulate functions throughout the body. As we age, the production of key hormones—including estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone—naturally changes. In women, testosterone may begin declining before estrogen and progesterone are fully depleted. Men also experience a gradual decline in testosterone as they age.

Are You Experiencing Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance?

Hormonal changes can look different for everyone, and they aren't limited to hot flashes or changes in sexual health. Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent fatigue or an afternoon energy crash

  • Difficulty sleeping or waking during the night

  • Brain fog, memory changes, or difficulty focusing

  • Anxiety, depression, irritability, or mood swings

  • Decreased libido

  • Weight gain or increased belly fat

  • Joint discomfort

  • Hair loss

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Hot flashes or night sweats

  • Vaginal dryness or recurrent vaginal or urinary tract concerns

Men can experience many of these symptoms as testosterone declines, including changes in energy, mood, muscle mass, sexual function, and overall well-being.

Hormones influence much more than reproductive health. Testosterone supports bone health, cognition, sleep, mood, energy, muscle mass, and sexual function. Estrogen plays an important role in sexual and vaginal health while also supporting the bones, heart, and brain. Progesterone contributes to functions such as metabolism, bone health, mood, and normal sleep patterns.

Could Hormone Replacement Therapy Be Right for You?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is designed to replace hormones when the body is no longer producing adequate amounts. Depending on the individual, women may receive estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, while men with low testosterone may receive testosterone replacement therapy.

Treatment options can include pills, patches, creams or gels, injections, and bioidentical hormone pellets. Pellet therapy uses individualized dosing and is designed to provide a steady release of hormones over several months.

If several of these symptoms sound familiar, you don't have to assume they're simply part of aging. The first step is understanding what is happening in your body. A consultation, review of your symptoms, and appropriate bloodwork can help determine whether a hormone imbalance may be contributing to how you feel and whether HRT may be an appropriate option for you.
